Volume 37, No. 1 -- January 2021
Interim Executive Director
We're proud to announce that Benson Pair will take over as the Interim Executive Director since Burk Kalweit retired at the end of 2020. Benson, now retired, was the Chief Technology Engineer-Environmental at KBR, responsible for the Environmental Engineering Group in the Project Definition Department.
Benson is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Texas and a Board Certified Environmental Engineer. We believe Benson’s dedication to the field along with his project management skills will be exactly what The Academy needs for 2021!
Welcome aboard, Benson!
Sammi Olmo Retiring from AAEES
After more than thirty years of service to the organization, Sammi Olmo is retiring from AAEES on January 29, 2021.
Sammi is a familiar face and voice for the Academy. You know her if you’ve ever:
- served on a Committee or as State Representative
- applied for Board Certification
- entered the Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Competition or Environmental Communications Competition
- attended a Board of Trustees Meeting
- joined us for the AAEES Awards Luncheon or other AAEES events
- been an award recipient
This list has the potential to extend for another page or so. Obviously, Sammi’s official title of Manager of Special Projects covers a multitude of areas. Though COVID made it impossible for 2020, Sammi’s face was often the first to warmly greet you at an Academy event.
Sammi began her stint with, what was then known as, the American Academy of Environmental Engineers in 19--. You know, the exact year isn’t important! But suffice it to say that Sammi has been a part of the Academy for nearly half of the Academy’s existence. She has seen the Academy through multiple headquarter locations, staff changes, and transitions. Through it all, she has remained warm, patient, and knowledgeable!
If you know her, you know that she loves family, dogs, the color red, cooking, wine, and chocolate! The same Sammi who warmly greeted you at the Academy events, made sure that you checked in okay, or offered to assist you in any way that she could, is the same Sammi we have worked with over the years.
She has often been the go-to person if you needed to know anything about the Academy. She could answer the question of who does what, what is that, where is that, when did we start doing that, and why is that where it is!
While we are sad to see her go, we are happy for her well-earned retirement. Her presence, warmth, patience, knowledge, and kindness will be missed at headquarters.
Thank you, Sammi, for the wonderful years.
We invite you to extend your well-wishes to Sammi at JSOlmo@aaees.org.

Scholarship Awareness Program-Help Get the Word Out
Our non-profit partner, the Environmental Engineering and Science Foundation, is offering six scholarships to students majoring in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science. One of the biggest challenges is making students aware of the availability of financial assistance. Each of us knows a professor or can contact a financial aid office at our alma mater or a local university or community college. You may even know a deserving student! Please take a minute to make contact with a colleague who could direct students to this scholarship program.
The best source of information is the EESF website: https://www.eesfoundation.org/scholarship/.
AAEES Career Center
