Stanley E. Kappe Award
The Stanley E. Kappe Award honors the man whose dedicated leadership, strong devotion, and tireless efforts contributed so much to the growth and advancement of AAEE during the period he served as its Executive Director, 1971 to 1981.
This Award is presented to the Board Certified Environmental Engineer or Board Certified Environmental Scientist who has performed extraordinary and outstanding service contributory to significant advancement of public awareness to the betterment of the total environment and other objectives to the Academy.

2023 Stanley E. Kappe Award Recipient
David A. Chin, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE
David A. Chin, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE has been involved in the Academy since 1997 when he was initially Board certified in the Water Supply and Wastewater area. Since then, his contributions to the Academy include:
- representing the Academy on the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission,
- representing the Academy on the Engineering Accreditation Commission,
- chairing of the Education Committee of the Academy, and
- serving as Vice President of the Academy.
Public service to the environmental engineering profession includes service on the Miami-Dade Environmental Quality Control Board, which is a quasi-judicial body empowered to grant waivers to environmental regulations in Miami-Dade County.
He serves as the Chi Epsilon District Councilor for the Southern District and oversees all Chi Epsilon (honor society) chapters in the southeastern United States. He is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Department of Chemical, Environmental, and Materials Engineering at the University of Miami.
His academic background includes a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology, M.S. from the California Institute of Technology, and B.Sc. from the University of the West Indies, all degrees in civil engineering. He has authored three textbooks, numerous refereed journal publications, and currently serves as the Chief Editor of the ASCE Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering.
