Daniel Oerther

Dan was named acting Executive Director in the summer of 2022 and began a three-year contract with the Academy in this role in the spring 2023. Previously, he held the position of President, and he served as the Treasurer of the Academy from 2013 through 2019. Dan was the first individual both to be Board Certified as an Engineer (BCEE) and as a Scientist (BCES). He founded and funded the Academy’s Student Team Award, and his own work has been widely recognized by the Academy, including:

  • 2009, Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science (E3S) University Research Honor Award for, “Improved Water in Northwest Tanzania”;
  • 2014. Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science Education (E4S) Award;
  • 2016, E3S Superior Achievement Award for, “Improved Water Quality in Ixcan, Guatemala”; 2017, Pohland Medal for sustained and outstanding efforts to bridge environmental engineering research, education, and practice; 
  • 2018, Kappe Award for extraordinary and outstanding service advancing the Academy; and 
  • 2020, E3S Environmental Sustainability Honor Award for, “COAST: Caribbean Ocean and Aquaculture Sustainability faciliTy”.
  • In 2020-2021, Dan served as the Kappe Distinguished Lecturer.

Dan holds an earned doctorate in environmental health engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Missouri and Ohio. He is a Certified Environmental Health Specialist and a Diplomate Laureate of the American Academy of Sanitarians and a lifetime honorary Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Dan also is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Environmentalist in the United Kingdom.

As Executive Director, Dan’s responsibilities include:

  • Serving as Secretary of the corporation, Board of Trustees, and the Executive Committee;
  • Ensuring preparation and maintenance all minutes, records, and financial transactions of the Academy and its bodies;
  • Supporting the successful operation of the Board of Trustees including leading the Academy in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission;
  • Strategic planning as well as implementation of programs and outreach to achieve the organization’s mission;
  • Ensuring financial performance and viability including proposing an annual budget, preparing monthly financial statements, supervising day-to-day fiscal management, as well as fundraising;
  • Enhancing the Academy’s image by being active and visible in the environmental engineering and science community including working closely with other professional, civic, and private organizations; and
  • Overseeing day-to-day operation including staff.
